Tonsillitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the tonsils, which are two masses of tissue at the back of your throat. Your tonsils act as filters, trapping germs that could otherwise enter your airways and cause infection. They also make antibodies to fight infection. But sometimes, they get overwhelmed by bacteria or viruses and results in tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis is common in children with less immunity but rarely seen in children less than 2 years of age. The most common bacterium causing tonsillitis is Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus), but viruses such as adenovirus, influenza virus, enterovirus and herpes simples virus can also be a cause for it.
Common signs and symptoms include:
- Sore throat.
- Difficult and painful swallowing.
- Bad breath.
- A scratchy sounding voice.
- Head ache.
- Red and swollen tonsils.
- Ear pain.
In ayurvedic science, tonsillitis is referred to as tundikeri which is mentioned under diseases of head and neck in classical textbooks. Causes include both diet and lifestyle errors such as excess consumption of sweet and cold foods, lack or oral hygiene, suppression of natural bodily urges, exposure to cold, indigestion and sleep in prone position.
As per Ayurveda, tundikeri occurs due to vitiation of three doshas, predominantly kapha and rakta in the body which occurs as a result of indulgence to etiological factors. This result in impairement of digestion which accumulates toxins in the body, thus leading to poor defence mechanism of body or reduced immunity. The vitiated kapha vitiates the doshas circulating in shiras (head) and gets localised in mukha pradesha (oral cavity), resulting in manifestation of tundikeri.
Ayurveda has a holistic approach to each illness and after treatment, not only shall the disease be subsided, but also the individual will attain a better quality of health.
