Tinnitus or ringing in the ears is the sensation of hearing ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling, or other sounds. It is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying problem. The noise is usually subjective, meaning that only the person who has tinnitus can hear it. The most common form is a steady, high-pitched ringing.
Persistent tinnitus can interfere with an individual's ability to perform usual daily activities and can prevent individuals from getting enough sleep. Tinnitus can cause considerable psychological distress and can be incapacitating for some individuals.
A variety of factors can trigger tinnitus, including: repeated usage of headphones, frequent exposure to loud noises, ear infection, certain drugs, aging, hypertension, anaemia, diabetes and neck or jaw problems.
According to Ayurveda, tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom. It is known by the name karnanada in Ayurveda. Karnanada occurs due to the disturbance of prana vata, a subtype of vata dosha (one among the three elements which maintain the stability of the body). Lack of sleep at night, cold water bath, stress and anxiety are also some of the reasons for karnanada according to Ayurveda.
By above said causes, vata dosha vitiates and gets localized in the channels which convey sound. Thus the person hears different kinds of sounds often, without any reason which is known as karna nada.
Ayurvedic perspective to the treatment of tinnitus is to pacify the vata humor and prevent damage to the ear.
