Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a painful inflammation of the elbow joint caused by repetitive stress (overuse). The pain is located on the outside (lateral side) of the elbow, but may radiate down the back of your forearm. You'll likely feel the pain when you straighten or fully extend your arm. It affects up to 3% of people, mostly between the ages of 30 and 50.
Tennis elbow often occurs when a specific muscle in the forearm — the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle — is damaged. The ECRB helps raise (extend) the wrist.
Repetitive stress weakens the ECRB muscle, causing extremely tiny tears in the muscle's tendon at the point where it attaches to the outside of the elbow. These tears lead to inflammation and pain.Tennis elbow can be triggered by any activity that involves repetitive twisting of the wrist. These activities may include tennis and other racquet sports, swimming, golfing and turning a key.
Other symptoms are: slowly increasing pain or burning on the outer part of the elbow, weakened grip and worsening of pain on squeezing objects.
According to Ayurveda, snayugata vata can be correlated with the condition of tennis elbow.
Snayugata vata is developed when the vata dosha( one of the basic body element) aggravates due to hyperactivity and over exertion, and gets localized in snayu (tendon) of kurpara sandhi (elbow joint). The vayu responsible for this function, that is, vyanvayu is ultimately unable to carry out the function of kurpara sandhi (elbow joint) and hasta pradesha (forearm) smoothly thus developing pain, stiffness, restricted movement and so on.
Ayurvedic line of management is to pacify the aggravated doshas, increase circulation, reduce inflammation and strain to the affected tendon and rejuvenate the tendons and muscle fibres, rather than just pain killing.
