SKIN DISORDERS

The skin is a vital organ that covers the entire outside of the body, forming a protective barrier against pathogens and injuries from the environment. It shields the body against heat, light, injury, and infection which makes it more prone to getting affected by various factors.

There are more than 3000 known diseases of the skin and they are among the most common health problems worldwide which are associated with a considerable burden. A cosmetically disfiguring disorder can have a significant impact, and can cause considerable discomfort and disability. Almost 73% of people are affected with skin disorder do not seek medical advice.

Skin disorders vary greatly in symptoms and severity. They can be temporary or permanent, and may be painless or painful. Some have situational causes, while others may be genetic. Some skin conditions are minor, and others can be life-threatening. Come of the common skin disorders are psoriasis, melasma, eczema, dermatitis and sunburn.

Psoriasis : It is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder that causes red, itchy scaly patches, most commonly on the knees, elbows, trunk and scalp. Psoriasis is non-infectious and it is often seen in people between 15 to 40 years of age. The patches can range from a few spots of dandruff-like scaling to major eruptions that cover large areas. Most types of psoriasis go through cycles, flaring for a few weeks or months, then subsiding for a time or even going into remission. Ayurveda describes psoriasis as kitibha kushta which occurs due to vitiation of vata, kapha, pitta & rakta doshas.

Melasma : Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that causes brown or gray patches to appear on the skin, primarily on the face. Women with darker complexions, who frequently expose to sunlight and who are pregnant are at greater risk of developing melasma. Ayurveda refers this condition as vyanga wherein vata, pitta dosha as well as manasika nidanas (psychological etiological factors) such as anger, grief and fear also contribute to its occurrence.

Eczema : Eczema is not a single health condition but a recognizable reaction pattern seen in a number of skin diseases. Atopic dermatitis, a common cause of eczema, is more prevalent in those with asthma and hay fever. Symptoms include itchy, red, and dry skin caused by inflammation. It is most commonly found in children, although adults can also be affected. According to Ayurveda, eczema can be compared to another health factor called vicharchika which has involvement of three doshas (basic elements of body) with dominance of kapha dosha.

Sunburn : Sunburn is caused due to the overexposure to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun. According to Ayurveda, people with pitta type body constitution are more vulnerable to sunburn. Exposing to sun rays can increase the pitta present in the skin causing redness, burning sensation, blisters and pain.

HOW AYURVEDA SEES IT

Ayurveda has included skin diseases (twak vikaras) under the umbrella of kushta and has pointed at its multifactorial etiology. They basically occur due to aggravation of three doshas or humors of the body (namely vata, pitta and kapha) and the 7 tissue elements mainly rakta (blood). Improper diet and wrong lifestyle, hormonal misbalance and stress can be cited as the three primary reasons for the occurrence of skin disorders.

HOW SKIN DISORDERS OCCURS

Due to the etiological factors, there will be aggravation of tridoshas which turn vitiates skin, blood, muscles and lymph as a result of which the vitiated doshas resides in the skin (twak) leading to the emergence of disease kushta characterised by different kinds of lesions on the skin.
