Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal disorders characterized by progressive peripheral vision loss and night vision difficulties (nyctalopia) due to degeneration of rod cells that can lead to central vision loss and blindness. A mutation in the genetic structure is considered as the cause of development of this condition. This mutation may be transferred from parents to offspring's resulting in passage of the disease to future degenerations.
The symptoms of retinitis pigmentosa manifest at any age from early infancy to late adulthood. The progression of symptoms occurs in a symmetrical manner with both right and left eye experiencing the symptoms at the same time. They include night blindness, loss of peripheral vision, blurring of vision, slow adjustment from dark to light and vice versa, poor colour vision, loss of central vision and eventual blindness.
Ayurveda describes similar diseases namely naktandhya, nakulandhya, doshandha and kaphavidagdha dristi which have profound similarities with symptoms of retinitis pigmentosa. When nakulandhya and doshandhya are considered as asadhya (incurable), naktandhya and kaphavidagdha dristi are grouped under sadhya (curable) or yapya (manageable). This may be correlated with types and stages of RP progression in modern medicine.
According to Ayurveda, retinitis pigmentosa is caused by the imbalance of the 3 major doshas in the eye. These vitiated doshas affects tarpaka kapha, alochaka pitta and prana vayu (types of kapha, pitta and vata) of eye in different proportion to cause the disease. The imbalance in pitta reduces the vision, imbalanced kapha blocks the channel and imbalance of vata disturbs the neurological control leading to progressive degeneration and loss of vision.
